Why OpenPool?
When talent meets talent, something that makes people say “Wow” is born.
Isn’t there a way to make more talents meet, and to make the world an even more interesting place to live?
To make that possible, we created OpenPool, an open-source, interactive “super billiard” system.
1. Why Billiards?
Billiards functions as the center of communication.
In today’s world, the value of physical communication is being re-acknowledged over virtual communication through PC screens.
In communal locations such as offices and campuses, where a large percentage of peoples’ everyday life are spent, the billiards table can work as a natural oasis for a wide variety of people with different backgrounds to gather.
Billiard’s unique characteristic, that it’s possible to chat while playing, makes OpenPool an ideal tool for communication.
2. Why Interactive?
We believe in the power of physical interaction.
To stimulate the five senses. To have a friend next to you. More of that kind of socialization is needed in society today.
Projection mapping, which perceives body and object movements and responds with sound and light effects, is the best technology to create interactive experience.
On the other hand, billiards is a universally standardized game, characterized by solid spheres on a flat and rectangular plane.
Projection mapping and billiards is the best combination imaginable.
3. Why Opensource?
When an encounter creates a chemical reaction, a seed of innovation is born.
People who can nurture these seeds to sprout and grow are people we call “makers”, such as engineers.
So, instead of just playing, we made it an open-source project so that anyone can become a “maker.”
Not just the software, but also the hardware, design, music, photos, movies, etc. – anything is welcome. “Open” in openpool.cc represents opensource, and “cc” stands for Creative Commons. OpenPool is a place where all kinds of creators collaborate, and something new is born.
